Rooted Behavioral Therapy is a group practice of doctoral-level clinical psychologists specializing in stress, anxiety, and trauma. We combine genuine warmth with evidence-based techniques — so the changes you make in therapy are real and lasting. We primarily draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and tailor every treatment plan to you. We offer individual therapy via telehealth for adults living in Massachusetts — and as Boston residents ourselves, we're honored to be part of this community.
My name is Elizabeth Barley. I am dual-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I have experience working in an inpatient caring for children and adults. I also have other various areas that I have worked in from the hospital setting, home health, and palliative/hospice care. I received both my Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatrist Nurse Practitioner degrees from Purdue Global University. While attending school I worked at an inpatient mental health clinic and worked remotely as a family nurse practitioner. My focus is on the treatment of depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other chronic mental health illnesses through psychiatric assessment, medication management,t, and brief psychotherapeutic intervention. I believe in creating an individualized plan of care that values client involvement, interprofessional collaboration, and evidenced-based practice. My goal for my clients is to feel empowered to treat their illnesses through supportive education in a safe environment. A client can expect their initial visit to include a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, determination of treatment goals and education about diagnosis and available treatment options. I have the pleasure of working alongside many skilled and experienced clinicians and am happy to collaborate and coordinate care with them when appropriate to the clients’ needs.

Welcome! I am a dual Board Certified Nurse Practitioner (psychiatry mental health and Family medicine) I began my career as a Cardiac Intensive Care nurse at a major teaching hospital in New York City. I have 35+ years of experience in nursing and a wealth of experience in almost all areas of mental health. I manage and treat a wide range of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and bipolar illness. Whether you are interested in finding a medication prescriber who can continue a treatment regimen that is already working well or seeking psychiatric services for the first time, I am excited to work with you to achieve your goals. Many people struggle alone for months or years with symptoms of anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, or other mental health problems. Reaching out for help is a crucial, courageous first step to improving mental wellness. In my practice, I prescribe medications to treat your symptoms when appropriate and safe. Although, I never solely rely on psychiatric medications as a complete fix. I utilize other treatment modalities as well (nutrition modification, sleep hygiene, and physical fitness). The Mind-Body connection is at the core of my treatment plan. I draw from my extensive background in internal medicine and years of psychiatric experience to inform my treatment decisions. We can work together to improve your quality of life. Please email me if you are interested in scheduling an intake appointment.
I have been in private practice in the Boston/Cambridge area for 30 years working with adults and adolescents, couples and families. I work with clients utilizing a trauma informed lens as well as elements of liberation psychology and relational cultural theory. I feel all clinical work must begin with a thorough understanding of a client's multiple identities and how those identities interact within their communities and the larger culture. My work and my passion are embedded in a deep committment to social justice. I specialize in multicultural treatment, identity development, trauma, depression, anxiety, work issues, life transitions, parenting issues, adoption, fertility issues, gender issues and sexuality. I serve as the Director of the Brandeis Counseling Center at Brandeis University and in that role help students and faculty navigate academia. I see clients in my office at 1105 Mass Ave in Cambridge which is a 5-10 min walk from the Harvard T stop. I also offer off street parking on Remington Street across from 1105 Mass Ave. My hours are 6am-8am Mon-Fri, Thurs 5pm-10pm and Sat 7am-3pm.
I'm a former Tufts CMHS counselor and excited to continue supporting Tufts students. My style is warm, present, and clear. I have a few openings and accept the Tufts student insurance. I am passionate about supporting clients in overcoming the many challenges of life through a process of developing self-compassion, identifying and building on strengths, and learning new approaches to achieve a sense of well-being and peace. I have experience working with individuals dealing with challenges of anxiety, depression, self-esteem, life transitions, social and communication challenges, gender and sexual identity, polyamory, and neurodivergence. My work is fueled by my sincere belief that everyone is doing the best they can with the tools they've got. I use a collaborative approach that integrates a person's intrinsic wisdom and lived experience with my clinical background so that together we can come up with new ideas, perspectives, and strategies. I help my clients acquire skills in reading themselves and learning how to re-adjust if things stray off-course. I hope to help clients foster self-compassion and acceptance. It is an honor to bear witness to someone else's story. I use a gentle, direct, and nonjudgmental approach involving reflection, questions, and humor. I work to help clients gain new understanding of old narratives. This may involve goal-setting, exploration of personal values, or collaboration for accountability. I recognize and celebrate the diversity of human experience including gender expression and neurodiversity. It's important to me to help you move toward the life that feels most meaningful to you.

I specialize in supporting individuals ages 18 + who are experiencing difficulties with Anxiety, Depression and Adjustments. The therapy session is a time and space one sets aside to focus on self. To be with self. And to build one’s self. It can be challenging to reflect on patterns, thoughts and emotions, relationships, past events and/or change, but it can also be transformative and rewarding. My role as your therapist is to witness your process and to reflect back with you along the way. The therapeutic relationship is an essential piece of my practice and is built on honesty, trust, empathy, and compassion. In conjunction with traditional psychotherapeutic frameworks (CBT, DBT, Gestalt, Psychodynamic), I use Expressive Arts Therapy (Movement, Drama, Music/Sound, Art) to help foster a creative process. When applied therapeutically, a creative process can help a person heal, open up to change, and may offer new feelings, thoughts, insights, and perspectives As a Dance/Movement Therapist, I specialize in using movement as a tool to identify, explore, and shift the way one relates to self, other, and the world around. I believe engaging in an integrative, body based psychotherapy process is a direct and effective path to embodied growth and transformation.
