Therapists for college students near Boston College
Hello! I offer in-person appointments at my office in Portland, Maine. I also provide video sessions to clients in Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and participating PSYPACT states. I have 14 years of experience working with undergraduate and graduate students in college counseling center and outpatient settings. I love working with this population! My integrative approach to psychotherapy utilizes evidence-based skills-focused therapies (such as CBT) combined with a strong Psychodynamic (insight-oriented) framework. Treatment interventions are thoughtfully chosen to fit the particular needs of each individual client. Clients who tend to be a great fit are seeking help for: anxiety, depressed mood, feeling "stuck", adjusting to college, relationship concerns, improving communication, navigating dating and marriage, coping with stress, job dissatisfaction, grief from loss, chronic illness, health goals, substance use concerns, sleep issues, EMDR for past/recent traumas. I welcome you to reach out to me to discuss if we might be a good therapist-client fit. I offer a free 15-minute telephone consultation to answer your questions and hear a bit about your personal therapy goals.
Welcome! In my practice, I enjoy helping young adults who feel anxious, stressed, and burnt out. I have extensive experience working with people struggling with eating disorders/disordered eating and body image, academic stress, perfectionism, and those who are constantly battling the voice in their head that says they’re “not good enough." Through my warm and personable approach, I’ll help you understand your emotions and develop new coping skills to face life’s obstacles. I have worked in eating disorder treatment centers in Boston at both the inpatient and outpatient levels of care and practice from a Health At Every Size (HAES) approach. In sessions, I utilize components of CBT, DBT, and Internal Family Systems therapy to aid clients in identifying and responding to difficult emotions or thought patterns. My hope is that our sessions are a comfortable and safe space for you to grow and feel supported. Whether you're seeking therapy to better understand your emotions, process a life change, or improve your relationship with food/body, I'll work collaboratively with you to identify and address your goals. I look forward to hearing from you!

As a psychologist, writer and consultant, my favorite population to work with are college students and graduate students, often managing mental health issues, while navigating independence, relationships and larger life choices all at once. In fact, I recently finished writing a book, "College Mental Health 101" based on hundred of interviews and thousands of students I've worked with over the years whose voices are in the pages. Whether its adjustment to school and making career decisions, to identity or family of origin concerns, to depression, anxiety and other mental health issues, I love working with students to find ways to improve their life circumstance. I have an academic interest in mindfulness, neuroscience and communication, and teach on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and globally.

As a therapist, I aim to be as authentic, supportive, and direct as possible; helping you to work on the obstacles standing in the way of reaching your goals. Sometimes this simply means experiencing an accepting and validating environment otherwise unavailable. Alternatively, this may consist of having an emotionally safe space to communicate with your partner or family. My approach depends on your goals for our work together and what degree of challenge you feel ready for. Conflict or connection, I am here to support you. Feedback I've received from clients typically includes comments along the lines of, "You aren't the type of therapist who just sits back and listens for an hour, but who gets me to consider things I hadn't thought of, helped me to figure myself out- what I really want, need, and how to deal". I truly enjoy helping my clients to gain a better understanding of themselves, identifying and building their strengths, and supporting them through difficult times. You may perceive an upsetting event as a minute issue or a monstrous crisis based on how others view it. My perspective however, rests on the impact and significance an experience holds for you. Life is challenging, especially when you are attempting to juggle school, work, relationships and unexpected life events. Reach out. A simple talk will help you determine if I can be of support.

Often, a significant source of suffering lies in thoughts and feelings that exist outside of our awareness and have not yet been able to find full expression. Psychotherapy offers the unusual opportunity to be listened to deeply and to learn to listen to ourselves in new ways. Exploring and developing insight into your inner life can lead to change—feeling better about yourself, shifting seemingly intractable patterns that have kept you stuck, and developing a greater sense of agency and fulfillment in your life. My practice provides a safe setting in which this exploration can unfold. I'll work collaboratively with you to help you make sense of distressing feelings and thoughts, gain insight into your experiences, and develop a more authentic relationship to yourself and to the world. I have advanced training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, and my work is influenced by psychoanalytic and trauma-informed approaches. I see adults and specialize in a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, complex trauma, and relationship difficulties. It is hard to get in a groove and to recover after the times of solitude, separation, and all things unknown we’ve experienced. You know yourself the best, but everyone needs help, support and help connecting these days. No one has been through this before! Off-Campus Clinicians is a group of highly trained doctoral-level psychologists who work closely with college and graduate students across Massachusetts (in-person sessions available in Cambridge, Watertown) and NYS (Telehealth only). We love our work, and we love working with students. We believe that real progress starts with an honest, trusting relationship, a space where you can speak openly, think out loud, and feel understood without being judged. Students often tell us they value our reliability and consistency. We show up, we stay engaged, and we bring a lot of experience working with young adults navigating the pressure, uncertainty, and growth that come with this stage of life - academically, emotionally, and relationally. We tend to work especially well with students who are thoughtful about themselves and curious about their own minds, people who want more than quick advice and are motivated to understand both what’s going on beneath the surface and how to take the needed accountability that helps life go in better, more desirable directions. If you’re looking for serious, supportive conversation with someone trained to help you make sense of your experience, please contact us.
Neuropsychological assessment can be pursued for a variety of reasons, but typically, it is to gain a deeper understanding of why you or your child may be struggling, find answers, and figure out what to do about it! Dr. Pamela Wineman will help you find these answers, and set you on a path toward building the resources and supports necessary to begin making progress in a way that is practical and realistic. Testing batteries are custom built based upon the referral question. Areas assessed might include: · Cognitive/Intellectual abilities · Academic achievement · Executive Function skills · Language · Social-emotional functioning. In particular, Dr. Wineman has expertise in administering projective testing measures which provide a more in-depth assessment of an individual’s worldview and affective traits. The use of projectives allows for exploration of one’s thoughts and feelings at the subconscious level. Dr. Wineman sees individuals with a wide range of diagnostic presentations (e.g., ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood disturbance, psychosis, behavioral issues, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders). She has a sub-specialty in individuals with complex mental health symptoms and psychiatric hospitalization, as well as trauma histories. Evaluations include an intake session, full assessment, and feedback session, as well as a comprehensive report with clinical diagnostic impressions and detailed recommendations. Most importantly, it it understood that many presenting problems can cause significant distress and thus, timeliness is essential. Clients can expect to receive reports within a few weeks of the final appointment.
I graduated from UMass Medical school and was trained in adult psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital. Prior to going to medical school I received a Masters in Teaching from Boston University and worked as a teacher. This unique background affects my approach to psychiatry. I believe that a good psychiatrist should work with you to help you learn about yourself and your mental health. I am trained in a variety of therapeutic styles including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), psychodynamic therapy, supportive therapy, and Gottman style couples/relationship therapy. During my time at CHA I worked extensively with the Gender and Sexuality Clinic to serve patients of diverse sexual and gender identities. I also co-lead a group therapy for individuals in polyamorous and non-monogamous relationships. I have taught at the American Psychiatric Association’s specialized rotation for HIV Psychiatry, including lectures on how to provide effective telepsychiatry, and I have presented at a national meeting on teaching providers how to better work with patients to prescribe medications. I am a licensed physician in Massachusetts, New York, and California. I offer in person appointments in Somerville, MA as well as secure telehealth appointments to those residing in Massachusetts, New York, and California. In addition to medication management I offer individual and relationship/couples therapy.
I'm a clinical psychologist, and I see college students and adults in my office in Belmont Center and via telehealth. I see people with a variety of concerns including anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and trauma. I trained at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School and I'm currently affiliated with Brigham and Women's Hospital. Overall my goal as a therapist is to work collaboratively to expand your self-understanding and support you in developing new strategies to relieve suffering, improve relationships, and build a life that feels meaningful to you. I offer a free 15 minute introductory phone call. I'm happy to talk with anyone who may be interested in learning more about my practice and seeing if we might be a good fit.
