If this is your first time looking for a therapist, or continuing your journey into self discovery finding someone to connect with may feel like a difficult task. I believe that the most important step in finding success in therapy is connecting with someone who understands you and can hear your perspective and respectfully challenge your thought process. Whether you are someone who comes to this setting thinking, “I don’t even know where to start,” or are coming with a list of tasks to begin working on, I would enjoy getting to know you As a previous director of a college counseling center I have experience working with teens, college age students, and young adults stepping out on their own and trying to discover who they are. Specifically working with LGBTQIA+ population on learning what their identity means in a new environment. As an adoptive parent and social worker I also have experience working with parents or teens who have had experience in foster care or adoption. My approach is person centered, and strength based. I have spent the last 15 years working in non-profit health centers and hospitals. I hold a Masters Degree in Social Work (2010), and licensed in MA and OR

***While I am not in-network with the Dartmouth Student Health Plan, I do bill that plan directly and students only pay a $35 copay each session.*** I particularly enjoy working with undergraduate and graduate students and my clients find my office location on Main Street easy to access from campus. I provide a warm, professional, and respectful environment where we will explore the concerns that brought you to therapy. We will work together to develop a coherent narrative of what is working and not working in your life, and draw on my experience and training to cultivate the insights, tools, and resources to create positive change. I work with adolescents and adults on a variety of concerns including anxiety, depression, relationship problems, identity questions, concerns about substance use, and life transitions; young adults struggling to thrive socially or academically; and the impact of learning disabilities on social and emotional functioning. My approach to therapy is informed by training and experience in traditional dynamic psychotherapy, CBT, attachment theory, executive function coaching and mindfulness techniques. I also have a deep interest in using findings in neuroscience to inform our understanding of various problems of living.

Clinical Social Work/Therapist
Belfast, ME

Hi, I’m Ben Borkan, and am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Gestalt Therapist. I primarily work with couples using Crucible® Therapy and Gestalt Therapy. However, I occasionally see individuals who are looking to work on their own relationships. I did not initially start out seeing couples. I began my career in wilderness therapy, where I guided groups of young adults and saw the impact of social relationships on individuals’ development, both from family systems and also in the healing work that can be accomplished in a group setting. My work in wilderness therapy inspired me to pursue clinical social work at Smith College School for Social Work where I received my MSW. In the past decade I have worked in a variety of settings, practicing various modalities with individuals, couples, families and groups. Therapy combines both my passion for learning and my desire to help others grow. Gestalt and Crucible Therapy are two approaches I find most empowering both personally and professionally. While different, each approach is strengths-based and takes a holistic and real view of people, and how relationships and marriage work. They are also backed with research and evidence that supports their effectiveness in helping people with their relationships. I received my Certificate in Gestalt Therapy at Gestalt Institute of the Rockies in Golden, CO where I learned how to work with people, including myself, to rewire obstacles to authenticity and intimacy. More recently, I began training in Crucible® Therapy; an approach that incorporates neuroscience to help people move past projections, behaviors, and thoughts that inhibit intimacy. I take pride in the work I do and do “the work” from these approaches in my personal life. I want to share what I have learned to help people experience similar sustained and meaningful change in their relationships.

Clinical Social Work/Therapist

Hi! My name is Katie Kalina, a licensed independent clinician with over 6 years of experience. I believe that everyone deserves to be heard and healed, and that as your therapist, it's my job to meet you exactly where you're at. One of my specialties is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). This is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Eye movement (or other bilateral stimulation) is used to work on one memory at a time for the mind to heal. I have worked with individuals and groups of all ages, from children to teens and adults through anxiety, depression, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, body image issues, relationship issues, and anger management. As your therapist, I will make it my mission to make you feel at home in our sessions. Once we meet, I will help you set goals and devise a plan that will make you transform in the ways that you wish to. Looking forward to completing this journey with you and bringing you ongoing success. I consider the relationship between client and therapist one of the most important factors in therapy. As a therapist, my goal is to create a comfortable, non-judgmental space so I can assist others in exploring negative patterns in their lives and help them develop new tools to foster positive coping skills. I utilize a holistic approach to therapy, with special focus on the body and mind and how they interact. As a registered yoga teacher, my treatment approach places emphasis on turning inward and reconnecting with the body to help release stored emotions. I use a trauma-informed approach to life issues with clients and incorporate mindfulness skills, somatic movement, and breathwork into my therapy practice. I specialize in treating anxiety disorders, PTSD, and mood disorders. Additionally, I work with clients who are experiencing grief and loss, life transitions, addiction, caregiver stress, interpersonal/relationship problems, and codependency.

I've been working with young adults for the better part of the last decade within the context of their homes, schools, communities and families. I have also been supervising young adults as well as older adults in juggling school work and family with their career ambitions. Fostering growth for these folks, including in many marginalized communities is, to me, an incredibly important part of building lives worth living, and growing the strength of our communities. As a white cis-gendered queer therapist I have done my own work on my identity that has allowed me to see and show up for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ folks, as well as supporting other white folks in this work. My practice is rooted in anti-racism, anti-oppression, and health equity. Our mental health is not only our individual biologies and brains, we are shaped by the systems we exist within and this has a direct correlation to our physical well being as well. What you need in therapy may or may not relate to issues of oppression, and it is important for those for whom this is relevant to know there is a space to been seen and acknowledged for the ways this impacts your life. Growth and transitions can be incredible, and also very stressful. If anything you've read here or seen in my profile resonates. I would encourage you to reach out to see if we would be a good fit for the support you are seeking.
