Hello, I’m Marsha Charlton, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, PMH-C (PSI), a board-certified Family and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I am passionate about supporting college students as they navigate the unique challenges of academic life and personal growth. With extensive experience in both primary care and mental health, I provide comprehensive medication management and supportive psychotherapy tailored to the needs of young adults. I also hold advanced certification in Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C) through Postpartum Support International. This credential reflects specialized training in the assessment and treatment of mental health conditions during pregnancy and the postpartum period, including mood and anxiety disorders, trauma-related concerns, and adjustment challenges. In my practice, I integrate this expertise through evidence-based screening, thoughtful medication management during pregnancy and lactation, and psychotherapy approaches designed to support individuals during the transition to parenthood. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and evidence-based. I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where patients feel heard, supported, and empowered to achieve their mental health goals.
Shoreline Wellness Center places a focus on talk therapy (psychotherapy) to help patients better manage the stress they encounter in their daily life. Working with a therapist has many benefits, such as coping with feelings, facing and solving problems, or changing behavioral patterns that are leading to some of your symptoms. In therapy, we don’t just talk about problems. The main goal is to develop a reasonable and doable solution. Sometimes you may have “homework” to complete for your therapist. This may include something like tracking your moods throughout the day, journaling about your thoughts, going out of your way to be social, or joining in activities that caused you to feel anxious in the past. Your therapist may even suggest for you to try to look at things differently or to learn new skills to use in your everyday life. Therapy focuses on current and past thoughts, feelings, and issues. Both are important, as they may very well be connected in some way. Discussing your challenges and having an open dialogue is the key to finding the solution to help your present and prepare for your future.
The road to self discovery is scary, and you are taking the first steps in seeking out the right therapist for you. It’s an important investment and you want to make sure you find just the right connection. My approach is deeply personal. Working with each person to learn and identify how they are impacted by the stories of their life and their history. In doing so, we are able to bring out what is truly possible. I believe strongly in the power of our stories. From a very young age, we all start learning things about ourselves and our world. These “life lessons” start to turn into the stories we repeat to ourselves over and over again. They become who we are. Those stories are not always nice and they hold us back. But most importantly, they are often not true! They are the stories we created when we were young and we have retold them to ourselves over and over again in a weird game of telephone with one player.
It's important to me to be someone my clients can trust to be nonjudgemental, validating, and interested in understanding them better. I hope to support clients in exploring their values and relationships; increasing feelings of self-esteem and self-efficacy; building skills to cope with distress and pain; and recovering from experiences of trauma and invalidation. I particularly enjoy working with clients who identify as highly sensitive or who experience emotional intensity.

College can look exciting and successful from the outside while feeling overwhelming behind the scenes. You may be struggling with anxiety, academic pressure, perfectionism, relationship concerns, family expectations, or uncertainty about who you are and what comes next. Maybe others see you as responsible, driven, or strong, but you feel exhausted from trying to keep everything together. I work with college students who are used to putting pressure on themselves, taking care of others, or feeling as though they must always perform well. Therapy can be a space where you do not have to have all the answers. Together, we can explore the experiences and patterns contributing to your stress, strengthen your confidence, and help you develop healthier boundaries, relationships, and coping skills. My approach is warm, collaborative, and tailored to your needs. Whether you are adjusting to college, navigating friendships or dating, questioning your identity, managing family stress, or preparing for life after graduation, I will support you in gaining clarity and feeling more grounded. When painful things happen in our lives, we do our best to cope with it in the moment. That might mean we get really good at “just dealing with it,” and “toughing it out.” Maybe we get really good at “checking out,” or maybe we become super skilled at coming up with clever ways to altogether avoid triggering situations. At one point in time, these skills served you well. And maybe they don’t any longer. Often, underneath these patterns anxiety and depression flood every day, drowning out our resources and making life difficult to enjoy. But changing these patterns and finding new hope can seem like an impossible feat. So often we know something is off because of what we feel in our bodies. Your heart starts pounding, that turning in your stomach, breathing feels tight, maybe you feel disconnected. The key to finding relief is not just about thinking differently. I am a Registered Dance/Movement Therapist and offer body-based techniques for approaching these issues. When we can tune into our bodies as well as our thoughts, we can begin to take control of our lives. I believe that you ultimately know what’s best for your own life. Sometimes it can feel scary to start therapy. What I usually tell my clients is “you’re in the driver’s seat.” I’m the copilot and have a map, and can point things out that maybe you didn’t see from your vantage point. Let’s figure this out together. Call or email for a free consultation.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a deep passion for working with young adults. I believe the early adult years are some of the most important—and often most misunderstood—seasons of life. Rather than something to simply “get through,” I view this stage as a powerful period of identity formation, growth, and possibility. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. After spending a year living abroad, I went on to receive her Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University. Throughout my graduate training and post-master’s clinical work, I have supported youth and families across a range of settings, including in-home therapy, group home care, outpatient clinics, and municipal mental health. I understand that young adulthood can feel overwhelming—whether it’s anxiety, relationships, school, or simply trying to figure things out. Therapy with me is a place to slow things down and make sense of what’s going on. Sessions feel like a real conversation, where clients can explore their experiences, connect patterns, and develop strategies that are actually useful in everyday life. My goal is to create a space where clients feel comfortable, understood, and supported as they navigate this stage.
