Therapists for college students near 10003
The clients with whom I work tend to seek a better understanding of their coping mechanisms, relationship patterns, and self-limiting beliefs. I often work with college and graduate students that struggle with negative beliefs related to their capabilities and worthiness. I help clients to explore how past experiences have contributed to developing coping mechanisms, such as persistent worry, perfectionistic tendencies, and hypervigilance in social situations, that may have been helpful in the past but are no longer serving them in the present.
TriBeCa Therapy is a center for psychotherapy that was founded on the assumption that human beings are original, imaginative, inspired, and inventive. We particularly love our work with young adults and college students and are connected to issues they deal with. Issues related to sex and dating, drugs and drinking, depression and anxiety and academic pressures aren’t topics that will freak us out. We can handle it. College students frequently discuss with us challenges such as: making friends in ways that don’t involve alcohol, making friends as a person of color, navigating social situations that demand connecting with strangers (like in the cafeteria) and finding “their people.” We work to create a partnership that takes these challenges on together, trying new strategies, taking increasingly bigger risks and dealing with the disappointments and celebrating the successes that follow. College is a time when many young adults are dealing with very adults issues like sex, sexual assault, eating disorders, substance abuse, managing money, race, class, and career choices. Creating a space where young adults feel comfortable talking about these issues is a strength of our therapists and a non-judgmental stance is key. The object isn’t to insist on a particular set of values or practices, but to support young people to understand what they are dealing with and to make active choices about who they want to be. For oppressed people to intentionally cultivate pleasure is an act of resistance - Ingrid LaFleur. I specialize in providing culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, poly & kink-friendly, and queer-affirming therapy. My journey as a queer, non-monogamous South Asian neurodivergent woman, along with the experiences of those close to me, deeply shape my approach. I draw on my first-hand knowledge of navigating kink/sex-positive environments. It's important to me to approach therapy with a sense of curiosity and openness so that I can better understand and support my clients. I view each individual within the context of their environment, recognizing the complex intersections of their various identities. I rely on evidenced-based methods that consider the impact of trauma and are attuned to diverse cultural perspectives. In my sessions, I strive to create a safe space for clients to rehearse for life outside of therapy. Building an authentic relationship with my clients is my highest priority. Jiddu Krishnamurti said that it is no measure of health to be adjusted to a society that is profoundly sick and I do not see therapy as a way to numb the pain that is caused by systemic oppression but rather a way to empower clients to have compassion for themselves.
I believe that we all possess the power to make lasting changes in our lives. We just need the right support. I take a holistic attitude to understanding the challenges my clients face, including paying attention to the importance of culture and environment. I believe that change occurs when we acknowledge intersectionality, the complexity of identity, and the important roles that social systems like family, religion, culture, class, gender, and race play in people’s lives, not when we ignore the broader picture and focus only on the individual. My goal is to walk with you on your journey and provide compassionate and collaborative guidance that fits exactly who you are while helping you move towards how you want to be in the world. I work with people dealing with a whole variety of mental health and mental wellness concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, spirituality, career and personal development, grief and loss, and life transitions. I have a special love for providing counseling to international students, immigrants, and refugees. Want to get started? Email me.

My philosophy of therapy is collaborative and holistic, and I aim to meet my clients where they’re at to inspire change. I am most passionate about working with queer people who have difficulty being fully authentic. We can work together to dismantle the stories and systems that have impacted this and cultivate greater self-compassion and self-awareness in who you are. In therapy with me, my clients feel seen and encouraged to show up as their authentic selves. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, my expertise is in relationships and seeing things through a systemic lens. I have experience working with folks with anxiety or depression that can interrupt their ability to live a full life, sometimes facing unsteady relationships and hoping for more security. Together, we can work to make sense of difficult relationships, own and advocate for your feelings and needs in relationships, and identify and set boundaries with others. My experience is in working with teens and adults in the context of individual, couples, or family therapy.
The students I work best with are curious, thoughtful, and often in a period of deep self-questioning. Many are figuring out who they are, what they believe, and what kind of life they want to build. Some have experimented with psychedelics and are left with big questions afterward about meaning, identity, emotions, or reality itself. They want support in making sense of those experiences in a grounded, non-judgmental way. I also work well with students who feel alone or disconnected, especially when that feeling traces back to childhood experiences, family dynamics, or early trauma. These students may struggle with anxiety, sadness, shame, or a sense that they don’t quite belong. Therapy with me is a space to slow down, feel understood, and explore what’s coming up without pressure to have it all figured out.
I use a psychodynamic approach which integrates spirituality and psychotherapy, helping people struggle with depression, loneliness, sexual abuse, drug addiction. I help couples and families learn to communicate their needs and feelings effectively. I work with gay men and lesbians seeking to integrate their sexual identity, as well as those working to enhance their relationships. I work extensively with people suffering from chronic illnesses (e.g. AIDS) and those who care for them. I am a Clinical Member of AAMFT, a fellow with AAPC, and have certificates in Pastoral Psychotherapy, Marriage and Family Therapy and Group Psychotherapy.

Trauma and the destabilizing events of our lives can impact our ability to grow no matter when or how they happen. We can find ourselves in harmful or unmanageable cycles that persist. By creating a safe space to creatively experiment in therapy you can provide yourself with the means and intention to grow. As a Clinician I have worked with clients experiencing addiction, the impact of trauma, and family dysfunction. Perhaps these challenges have led to unhealthy behaviors that don't fit who you are and what you need anymore. Or that you have reached many of your goals but realize the cost has been an internal battle that persists. I am passionate about partnering with my clients to create that safe space and have been inspired by witnessing what happens when it is created. Using a trauma informed lens I offer concrete tools for growth for those experiencing acute symptoms and mindfully move folks into deeper and more intimate somatic and creative interventions when ready.

Life is full of constant change that we are learning how to navigate every day. Often, adjusting to these changes can bring up a range of emotions including anxiety, depression, and self-doubt. I wholeheartedly believe that everyone has the potential and ability to adapt to these ever-changing challenges in constructive ways that allow them to expand their lives. Our therapeutic relationship would be a source of kindness, calmness, and empowerment in your life. By exploring your current habits and patterns, we can bring awareness to what is working well for you and transform the less effective methods into constructive actions that help bring you closer to feeling your best. I understand that reaching out for therapy can feel a little intimidating, especially if it’s your first time.
