Therapists for college students near New York, NY
I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience working in a private practice setting. I received my doctorate in clinical psychology from the State University of New York at Albany and completed an APA approved internship at the Medical University of South Carolina. My training emphasized a CBT orientation to treating psychological disorders. After completing my education, I was a member of the doctoral faculty in clinical psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University for almost 30 years before electing to go into private practice full time in July 2020. My experience working at a university as both a professor and program director, has helped me understand the difficulties that students face. Moreover, it has given me insider knowledge about how students can most effectively navigate the challenges that college poses and effectively advocate for themselves with their course instructors. Recently, a colleague and I formed a CBT-based private practice focused on adolescents, young adults and adults. My areas of specialization include OCD, panic and other anxiety disorders, depression and other mood disorders, substance abuse, and body-focused repetitive behaviors (e.g. hair pulling). I conduct a comprehensive evaluation and provide all the treatment directly. Treatment is tailored to the individual needs of the client, but it typically involves a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). I am committed to providing the best treatment available to my clients, which may involve (at their request) a referral for psychiatric consultation, inclusion of family members, and home visits. Hey, man. Your friends, family, or your partner aren't supposed to be your therapist. You need an outlet where you can be vulnerable, speak freely, and unburden yourself without any fear of backlash that could damage the relationship. You want a return on investment of the time, money, and energy that you put into therapy because that's what matters most. You need a therapist who gets you because you deserve to build a life worth living. This relationship needs to feel right, and you want a therapist who can join you through the truth, tell you like it is, and help you find the best tools for your toolbox. Usually, clients connect with me because of challenges connected to men's issues, grief & loss, emotion regulation, relationship issues, and life transitions through pregnancy and postpartum.
You're entering or exiting college, and life feels like a maze; relationships, family, identity, academics, career... it can be a lot. Maybe you find yourself feeling stuck, overthinking everything, or wondering why you feel disconnected in your relationships. You are not alone. I help young adults drop self-limiting beleifs and find a sense of empowerment in their true selves. Whatever you are struggling with, I offer a space to explore unwanted patterns with curiosity (some humor) and no judgment. I believe the client-therapist relationship is the most important component in healing and I strive to be transparent and affirming. Together we can explore how your past is affecting the way you show up in the world now. We will practice tools, strengthen your self-understanding and create trust in your mind and body. As a creative arts therapist of 9 years, I am trained in traditional talk therapy and evidence based art therapy. It is your choice each session to decide which we use to explore your goals. Change can feel scary, and at the same time, often leads to fulfillment. I invite you to reach out so we chat about what you would like to see improve in your life.
YOU’RE NOT LIVING THE LIFE YOU WANT TO BE LIVING. You’re unhappy, but you’re not sure why. At times, we can feel lost, numb, and disconnected from ourselves. There can be many reasons for this, and through our work together, we will understand what these are and how to reconnect, to live a vibrant, fully embodied life. Perhaps, no matter how many times you talk about past trauma, it still feels raw. Something isn’t healing. SOME PART STILL FEELS STUCK. It’s been my experience that trauma lives in the body, as well as the mind, and when we treat only the thoughts or the pictures in our heads, the deepest part of what is hurt sometimes isn’t heard. I specialize in the treatment of trauma, particularly childhood sexual abuse, in techniques that reach the whole self, such as EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS), and will work together to heal the past so that you can live fully in the present as a whole and empowered self. HAVING A NEW BABY can bring with it the highest highs and the lowest lows. It is normal to feel overwhelmed, and scared, and that you’re doing it wrong. Parenthood is a time of growth, but also an adjustment period, maybe the biggest we have ever faced! AS A MOTHER MYSELF, I understand this journey, and through my past work and training in perinatal loss and mood disorders, am here to help you navigate this time, and feel stronger as a result. Any transition into a new time of life, be it as a college student, first-time parent, or navigating midlife, there is the potential for creativity and growth, but uncertainty, anxiety, and fear as well. I’M HERE TO HELP YOU THROUGH THESE TIMES OF CHANGE. My approach is collaborative, creative, and individualized. Just as every fingerprint and person is unique, it’s my belief that every therapy should be as well.

You - feeling overwhelmed, stuck, like the world is on fire and you're supposed to just "cope." You - navigating relationships, friendships, and family, questioning who you are, thinking "what's next?" Sessions with me - a space for you to talk things out, get clarity and confidence, and a better relationship with your self. You show up as you are, and we go from there, without you feeling judged or "therapized" like it's going out of style. (Although that is something I can provide if you really want! We can figure it out as we go, that's kind of the point!) My approach to therapy is relational, which means I believe the trust and connection between therapist and client is paramount to the healing process. I see you as the expert of your life and my role is support and guide you with compassion and curiosity. Together we can explore what's working, what's not, and how you can move forward. I'm especially passionate about supporting women, college students, and LGBTQ+ folks as you navigate the complexities that come with living in today's world. Therapy should be a place of growth, insight, and finding the joy among the hurt. If you're ready to explore and create meaningful change for yourself, I'd love to work with you!

OnTrackNY is an innovative treatment program for young adults who have recently have had unusual thoughts and behaviors or who have started hearing or seeing things that others do not. OnTrackNY helps people achieve their goals for school, work and relationships.
Many of the people I work with are Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) who are struggling to navigate multiple areas of their life like work, school, family, relationships, or the intersectionalities of their identities. Many talk about often feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or stuck. This then kicks off to what feels like a never ending cycle of confusion, frustration, depression, and anxiety. Therapy is an opportunity to find clarity and work through these obstacles to help people get their life back on track. My clients and I work together to develop more mindful behaviors to help lead a more meaningful and healthy life. People develop certain attitudes and perspectives based on their early life experiences to survive when they were younger. But these attitudes and perspectives are not helping now which is part of the reason why people might feel stuck. By looking at these attitudes and perspectives closely, people can learn to change how they talk to themselves, how they react to their emotions. and take more thoughtful actions to move forward towards a more authentic and fulfilling life. My practice integrates several evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) that encompasses principles of person-centered, recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, multiculturalism, and strength-based values. With my compassionate, collaborative, non-judgmental, and down-to-earth style, therapy can address the things that are getting in the way of people’s life so that they can move forward. COMMON EXPERIENCES THAT I WORK WITH PEOPLE ON: - It feels like your mind is playing tricks on you - It feels like your eyes or ears are playing tricks on you - It feels like something odd is going on or hard to explain - Confused at times whether something is real or imaginary - You feel suspicious or mistrustful of others - It feels like you have little control over your thoughts - It feels like others can hear your thoughts or read your mind - Having thoughts or beliefs that you or others find strange - Race-related identity, culture, and intersectionality - Cultural and systemic trauma and oppression
